The Great Terroirs of South-West France

South-West France is one of the country's most diverse wine regions. Stretching from the foothills of the Pyrenees to the limestone plateaus of Cahors and the hills of the French Basque Country, it encompasses a remarkable variety of climates, soils and indigenous grape varieties.

Long overshadowed by neighboring Bordeaux, the finest wines of South-West France have gained increasing recognition in recent decades thanks to passionate winemakers who have revealed the exceptional potential of their terroirs and native grapes.

The Iconic Appellations of South-West France

Cahors

The historic birthplace of Malbec, Cahors produces deep, structured red wines with outstanding ageing potential. The region's limestone plateaus and terraces now give rise to some of the most exciting wines in South-West France.

Jurançon

Located at the foot of the Pyrenees, Jurançon is renowned for both dry and sweet white wines made primarily from Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng. The finest examples combine freshness, aromatic intensity and remarkable longevity.

Madiran and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh

Madiran is the spiritual home of the Tannat grape variety, producing powerful, age-worthy red wines. Nearby Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh offers distinctive dry and sweet white wines that remain among France's best-kept secrets.

Irouléguy

Nestled in the heart of the French Basque Country, Irouléguy benefits from steep hillside vineyards influenced by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrenees. The appellation produces characterful wines from native grape varieties perfectly suited to this unique environment.

The Leading Estates of South-West France

Our selection showcases some of the region's most respected producers, including Camin Larredya in Jurançon, Les Jardins de Babylone by Louis-Benjamin Dagueneau, Cosse Maisonneuve and Mas del Périé in Cahors, Domaine Ilaria in Irouléguy and Labranche-Laffont in Madiran.

These estates perfectly illustrate the quality renaissance of South-West France and the extraordinary potential of its indigenous grape varieties.

90/100 RVF. For 20 years, we have been tasting (admittedly as amateurs) wines from this rather rustic Basque appellation Irouleguy, without ever finding a cuvée that could make a good impression in our elitist and deliberate catalog. We have finally found a consistent domaine, whose finesse in winemaking has amazed us. Forget your preconceptions and...

The new ultra fruity cuvée from the domaine, made from young Malbec vines. An unpretentious bottle, like the winemakers who created it (and yet, what talent!), to be enjoyed without delay, and during the summer, why not slightly chilled in a champagne bucket filled with fresh water but without ice! A tip: have a second bottle not too far away!

Except for exceptional pre-phylloxera cuvée, here is THE high-end cuvée from the most renowned domaine in Madiran, both fine and structured. These old vines of the tannat grape (>50 years!) allow for a rare elegance in Madiran. Released from the cellars of the domaine in May 2026.

"VP" = Prolonged Aging. The domaine kept a portion of its 2020 vintage to offer it a prolonged aging of four years in total, released in March 2026 for our greatest pleasure. What a brilliant idea in the service of your taste buds... We have tested and validated the impressive contribution of a long aging (effective only in a very great year).

A new cuvée that is extremely rare, without appellation, made from siderolithic clays. "A Bomb of cabernet franc!" according to Matthieu Cosse... who is still astonished by the enthusiastic reactions of the tasters - including yours truly - when they taste this new cuvée for the first time. A velvety revelation!

95/100 RVF. A Cahors made from old Malbec vines aged 60 years on limestone scree. This 2021 is quite appealing even in its youth, in 2023 upon its release. However, it will age well for many years in a good cellar. Best enjoyed before the powerful 2020.

A very colorful rosé, far from trends, like a very light red and especially leaning towards strawberry! Fineness too, and a freshness that allows it to accompany the finest dishes, even in the height of summer. Superb liveliness, superb quality for this price.

The king grape variety in the land of the Châteaux de la Loire is featured in this box. You will be surprised, if you are patient, by the ability of cabernet franc to evolve beautifully over time. You will also be impressed by the "faux Cahors" from Catherine Maisonneuve and Matthieu Cosse, who have a true admiration for this grape variety and therefore...

96/100 RVF. An orange UFO for connoisseurs, straight out of the imagination of Jean-Marc Grussaute, who produced 700 bottles of this maceration wine that still contains 20 grams of sugar, for an absolutely unique balance. Exceptional and extremely rare, this wine is unlike any other. The winemaker claims that 2021 is an exceptional vintage.

A white and organic Irouleguy already perfectly opened, with a remarkably complex nose. Extremely rare in this appellation... and in the broader South-West for that matter. Very impressive liveliness, the result of perfectly mastered minerality and acidity. A very beautiful wine that awakens the taste buds!
