The Great Terroirs of Savoie
Long associated with mountain wines traditionally enjoyed alongside Savoyard cuisine, the wines of Savoie have undergone a remarkable quality renaissance in recent decades. Driven by a new generation of talented winemakers and exceptional Alpine terroirs, they are now among the most sought-after wines by enthusiasts and sommeliers alike.
Nestled between the Alps, lakes and steep mountain slopes, the Savoy vineyard benefits from a wide diversity of soils and microclimates. Some vineyards are planted on spectacular hillside terraces that require entirely manual work, comparable to the heroic viticulture found in Côte-Rôtie or the Rhine Valley.
The Appellations of Savoie
Vin de Savoie
The Vin de Savoie appellation accounts for the majority of the region's production. It is often complemented by renowned geographical designations such as Apremont, Chignin, Chignin-Bergeron, Arbin and Jongieux, which identify some of the finest terroirs in the region.
Roussette de Savoie
Produced exclusively from the Altesse grape variety, Roussette de Savoie yields elegant white wines with remarkable complexity and excellent ageing potential. The crus of Marestel, Frangy and Monterminod are among the most highly regarded.
IGP Vin des Allobroges
This designation allows certain winemakers greater freedom beyond the traditional appellation rules. It notably includes several prestigious cuvées from the renowned Domaine des Ardoisières.
The Great Grape Varieties of Savoie
Jacquère
The emblematic white grape of Savoie, Jacquère produces fresh, crisp and mineral-driven wines. It is notably used in the famous Apremont and Abymes appellations.
Altesse
Altesse, also known as Roussette, gives rise to refined white wines combining freshness, aromatic complexity and excellent ageing potential.
Roussanne
Best known through the Chignin-Bergeron appellation, Roussanne produces generous wines with notes of apricot, honey and sweet spices.
Mondeuse
A flagship red grape variety of Savoie, Mondeuse produces structured, spicy wines with impressive ageing potential.
Persan
Revived by a handful of passionate growers, Persan is prized for its freshness, fine tannins and distinctive spicy character.
