Ilarria, a reference in Irouleguy

ilarria-sud-ouest-irouleguy-peio-espilPeio Espil produces Ilarria wines from the Pays Basque, in the Irouleguy appellation. The reds are made from tannat, cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon grapes. The whites are based on petit manseng and courbu.

Ilarria estate is a family property that has existed for several centuries. Peio Espil is at the head of this estate which covers 30 hectares, including 10 hectares of vineyards. Ilarria was the first estate of the appellation to be vinified outside the cooperative. Etymologically, Ilarria is an old house in the village.

The winemaker produces his wines from the Basque country on clay-limestone soils, perfectly adapted to local grape varieties such as tannat for reds and petit manseng and courbu for whites.

Irouleguy is one of the smallest vineyards in France. Classified in AOC since 1970, it is the only AOC of tBasque Country.
Certified in organic for 15 years, the estate was the first to be organic on the Irouleguy appellation. Peio Espil is very respectful of the soil and the environment: he practices a low yield production (30 to 35 hl / ha), harvest by hand, and interferes very little during the vinification.
