Jean-Claude Rateau : biodynamic Beaune and Beaune 1ers crus

jean-claude-rateau-bourgogne-beauneJean-Claude Rateau produces fine Burgundy wines in Beaune and Beaune Premier Cru appellations on clay-limestone soils. Traditional grape varieties are planted : Chardonnay for the whites and Pinot Noir for the reds.

Jean-Claude Rateau comes from a winemakers family. His paternal grandfather, Lucien Rateau was a cellar worker and produced white and red Cote de Beaune. His maternal grandfather produced a Beaune village with great potential for ageing. His father cultivated and vinified plots of Bressandes Prevolles and Reversees. Jean-Claude has therefore been immersed in the wine world since his childhood.

After studying at the Wine Highschool, he undertook a "Tour de France" to visit winemakers and gain experience. He started his own business in 1979 with 2 hectares of family vines. Very close to his terroir and very concerned with the environment, a pioneer for the time, he made the choice of biodynamics. According to him, living organisms are essential to the vine.

Like the Trapet, Jean Claude and his wife are both winemakers, one in Burgundy, the other in Alsace. Indeed, his wife Sylvie Spielmann also produces biodynamic wines in Alsace.

The elegance of organic pinot noir vinified by JC Rateau shines perfectly in this AOP "Hautes Côtes de Beaune," which is unfortunately quite underrated... and consequently, the prices haven't skyrocketed :-)

A superb Gevrey Chambertin whose prices are not yet breaking records, it's rare enough to be immediately cellared, on the spot, and especially due to the love at first sight that struck us: we quickly understood when the winemaker explained that his plots were located just below the classified Grand Cru climates, thus the most elegant area of the AOP!

Bressandes may be even more renowned than the AOP "Beaune 1er Cru"! A superb and unique climate where both structure and expressiveness (pepper and spices) can be found. A 1er Cru from Burgundy that is still accessible... in price and tasting: we are in 2024 and it is already excellent, like its elder from 2019. More than the latter, the 2020 will age...

The "poor relative" grape of Burgundy, overshadowed by chardonnay... yet what a delightful surprise when tasting this 2022! It is Sylvain Pataille who is restoring the nobility of aligoté a bit further north. Jean-Claude Rateau is not far away! A superb tension, a beautiful balance, in short, nothing to envy from the more "prestigious" grape varieties!
