Chateau des Rontets, among the best Pouilly-Fuisse

fabio-montrasi-rontets-pouilly-fuisseChateau des Rontets is a historical vineyard created by the abbot Glaneur at the beginning of the 19th century. This one belongs to the Varambon family since 1850.

Since then, the property of Rontets has remained in the same family and in 1995 Claire, great-granddaughter of François Varambon, takes over the vineyard with her husband Fabio Montrasi after a first life of architects.

Today, Chateau des Rontets vineyard is made up of a 5.6 hectare Clos on Les Rontets and a 0.5 hectare plot on the former place Pierrefolle, both in AOP Pouilly Fuissé and giving birth to the three wines "Les Rontets", "Birbettes" and "Pierrefolle".

Since 2005, all the vines of the vineyard are cultivated in organic farming certified by Ecocert. For the couple of winemakers, this practice is the best way to facilitate the expression of the vocation of the places.

The abandonment of all chemical weedkillers and the plowing of soils are forced passages to allow the roots of the vine to plunge deeply to assimilate the mineral and nutritive elements of the soil exploring its different layers. All new plantings and missing replacements are made using only plants from mass selection to preserve the diversity and complexity of the plant material.

The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand in small crates to avoid bursting of the berries.

Alcoholic fermentations are initiated only from natural yeasts, and malolactics are never stopped. This can lead to fermentations lasting several months, in which different strains of native yeasts develop a series of specific flavors. This choice contributes to increase the aromatic complexity of the wines and allows the particular expression of the terroir.

Most of the winemaking is carried out in barrels or barrels, without new wood. The wines are then assembled in stainless steel tanks and undergo long aging ranging from 12 months for the "Varambon" to 24 months for the prestigious "Les Birbettes".

The vineyard is today considered a classic, undeniable of the appellation and remains at very affordable prices for fine Burgundy wines!

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Neil Martin, août 2013) : Chateau des Rontets is worth a visit not only for their excellent wines, but the spectacular vista from this, one of the highest vineyards in Macon at around 350 meters. The vines, cultivated on hard and well-drained limestone soils, have been farmed organically since 2005 with minimal spraying (though it was “invaded” by 713 naked men and women in 2009 for a photograph in aid of Greenpeace – I am sure there is a Maria Thun preparation to deal with that). Here one finds a very traditional, meticulous approach to winemaking, the results of which are there to be tasted in the wine glass.
