Christine Vernay magnifies Condrieu appellation.

christine-vernay-condrieu-rhoneFormer teacher at the ENA, Christine Vernay took over from her father, Georges Vernay, in 1997. He was the pioneer in restoring the Condrieu appellation by planting viognier (the only grape variety of the appellation) in inaccessible areas where no one dared to produce wine: up to 45 ° slope! The Condrieu appellation covered 8 hectares in 1960 ... Today, it covers 168 hectares.

The Vernay Estate is entirely maintained and harvested by hand, without chemicals. If three generations have already succeeded one another, we can say that Christine Vernay enabled the estate to enter the elite of the great French wines: she has met her challenge of raising her red wines to the level of her whites. The whites are considered unanimously as the finest Condrieux, and are even among the best white wines in the world (Coteau de Vernon, Chaillees de l'Enfer, and Terrasses de l'Empire). The reds wines Saint Joseph and especially Cote Rotie are now also very popular, especially outiside of France, where the image Condrieu still sticks to the estate. A simple tasting enables us to understand how all the efforts made in the vineyard and in the cellar have been successful.

Christine Vernay is lucky to own some of the best parcels of Syrah in the Cote Rotie appellation, especially the famous parcel « Maison Rouge », which is less than 1 hectare... She also produces a more affordable cuvee called « Blonde du seigneur ». The quality of the wines is greeted by the guides and the wine lovers. Definitly wines to keep in your cellar for ageing !

Video of the estate

To know more about the estate, you can watch this video (at 42’30) where Luc and Christine Vernay show how they take good care of their vines before the harvest.
