Drapeau Alsace VinsGrands Crus and Wines of Alsace

The Alsace wine region covers 15,300 hectares, all of which are classified as Protected Designation of Origin.

78% of Alsace's grands crus and wines benefit from the ‘Alsace’ appellation, with seven recognised grape varieties: Muscat, Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

4% of the harvest is classified as ‘Grand Cru’ (51 different appellations, depending on the terroir) and limited to four noble grape varieties: Muscat, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling.

Depending on the date of harvest (and therefore the ripeness of the grapes), two specific terms may be used: Sélection de Grains Nobles and Vendanges Tardives.

Vendanges Tardives come from the four Grand Cru grape varieties, harvested later when overripe. The sugars are thus concentrated in addition to the action of botrytis cinerea, commonly known as ‘noble rot’.

Sélections de Grains Nobles are cuvées with an even higher sugar concentration, since, as their name suggests, the grapes used to make these cuvées are harvested several times, following multiple passes through the vineyard, and picked only when the berries affected by noble rot are considered sufficiently concentrated.

The terroirs of the Alsatian vineyards are very diverse, both in terms of their exposure (mostly south or south-east) and their geology: slate, schist, blue marl, granite, clay, limestone, sand, etc.

The common feature of Alsace's vineyards is a temperate, cool climate and very little rainfall (thanks to the protection of the Vosges mountains).
