Jean Esprit, young talented winegrower, 5th generation in Crozes-Hermitage
Jean Esprit produces great Rhone wines in Crozes-Hermitage appellation. The red wines are made from the Syrah grape variety, and the white wines are a blend of Roussanne and Marsanne. It is a family estate dating from the beginning of the 20th century.
Located on the left bank of the Rhone, in Pont de l'Isere, the vineyard covers 15 hectares of vines: 14 ha in red and 1 ha in white. The soil is made up of rolled pebbles, as in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and the oldest vines are a hundred years old, undoubtedly the oldest in the region!
The estate was founded by Joseph (Jean's grandfather) in the early 1900s. The estate's prestigious cuvee is called "Le Zouave" in homage to the founder, a fighter in this historic African entity of the Second Empire.
A young, meticulous, dynamic and passionate winegrower, not devoid of ambition given the potential of his vines, Jean represents the 5th generation at the helm.
After the classic viti-oeno studies in Beaune, Provence and Languedoc, he went to vinify in several houses in France and internationally - notably in New Zealand. On his return he went back to the family property and took over from his father in 2017, with the ambition of no longer selling the grapes to the cooperative cellar, but to have his own facilities. He immediately had a beautiful winery built, the only investment that was missing to offer great Crozes Hermitage, so well does he know that his vines and his location are privileged in the appellation.
The vineyard is driven by values of respect for the terroir and the environment: work without weedkillers, a very organic view of agriculture.
Surrounded by the two most famous winegrowers of the Crozes Hermitage appellation (Alain Graillot and Laurent Combier), Jean Esprit is an example of success. From its 1st vintage, it was voted "favorite" by the Hachette guide and his wines can already be found on beautiful starred tables.
