Grands Crus, 1er Crus and Grands Vins of Burgundy

Burgundy is defined by several regions and a multitude of terroirs. The Grands Crus, 1er Crus and other Great Wines of Burgundy produced there bear a very specific appellation. In each valley, the terroirs and associated microclimates have given rise to countless lieux-dits, each defining a different character for the wine produced there. These are the ‘climats’. Whether red or white, the best are classified as Grand Cru. Next come the Premiers Crus, then the Villages, and finally the regional appellations such as ‘hautes côtes de...’ or simply Burgundy. In Burgundy, there are 1,247 climats listed, i.e. 1,247 vineyard plots with very different and recognisable characteristics! Since 2015, these climats have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. From north to south, the valleys follow one another along the appellations.
