Chenin, Cabernet Franc and the Great Terroirs of the Loire Valley

The Loire Valley is one of France’s most diverse wine regions. From Nantes to Central Loire, through Anjou, Saumur, Touraine and Sancerre, it produces an exceptional range of white, red, rosé, sweet and sparkling wines.

Loire Valley Wine Map

Explore our selection of fine Loire Valley wines from leading domaines in Montlouis-sur-Loire, Saumur, Chinon, Bourgueil, Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé and the Côte Roannaise.

The Great Terroirs of the Loire Valley

The Loire Valley benefits from a temperate climate. Near the Atlantic coast, Nantes and Anjou are influenced by oceanic conditions, while the climate becomes more continental further inland in Saumur, Touraine and Central Loire.

The microclimates created by the Loire River and its tributaries, together with varied slopes, exposures and soils, explain the remarkable diversity of fine Loire wines. The region produces crisp dry whites, elegant reds, age-worthy sweet wines and refined sparkling wines.

The Main Wine Regions of the Loire Valley

The Nantes Region

Around Nantes, Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine is planted on a wide range of soils, including acidic and mineral-rich rocks. Melon de Bourgogne produces dry, precise and saline white wines.

Anjou and Saumur

Anjou and Saumur are marked by schist, tuffeau limestone and clay-limestone soils. These terroirs produce outstanding dry and sweet Chenin Blanc wines, as well as remarkable Cabernet Franc reds in Saumur-Champigny.

Touraine

Touraine is defined by tuffeau limestone, flint clay, sands and gravel soils. It produces great white wines in Montlouis-sur-Loire and Vouvray, as well as elegant red wines in Chinon, Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil.

Central Loire

Central Loire includes Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Menetou-Salon, Reuilly and Quincy. Sauvignon Blanc expresses great aromatic purity here, while Pinot Noir produces refined and elegant red wines.

The Signature Grape Varieties of Loire

Chenin Blanc

Native to the Loire Valley, Chenin Blanc expresses terroir with remarkable precision. It can produce dry white wines, sparkling wines, as well as off-dry, sweet and botrytised wines with outstanding ageing potential. It excels in Montlouis-sur-Loire, Vouvray, Saumur and Anjou.

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blanc is the emblematic grape variety of Central Loire. In Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, it produces expressive, precise and terroir-driven white wines.

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc is the great red grape variety of the Loire Valley. It is especially important in Chinon, Bourgueil, Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, Saumur and Saumur-Champigny, where it produces fresh, refined and age-worthy red wines.

Melon de Bourgogne

Melon de Bourgogne, the sole grape variety of Muscadet, produces dry, crisp and saline white wines that perfectly reflect the terroirs of the Nantes region.

The Leading Domaines of the Loire Valley

Our selection highlights some of the Loire Valley’s most sought-after producers, including François Chidaine, La Taille aux Loups, Didier Dagueneau, Vincent Pinard, Bernard Baudry, Philippe Alliet, Arnaud Lambert, Thierry Germain, Domaine de la Butte, Domaine Huards and Domaine Sérol.

This blend of Gamay (for indulgence) and Pinot Noir (for structure and elegance) is technically perfect. At this price, lovers of delightful discoveries "from behind the volcanoes" will not be disappointed! This 2025 is just bottled when we receive it in March 2026, give it a few weeks/months to settle and prefer the 2024s for a tasting in 2026! WARNING:...

This is the great cuvée of prestige from the domaine, named after a local aristocracy figure, the godfather whose name it bears. The best grapes and the best aging (barrels made from oaks of the famous Tronçais forest) for this cuvée which is both round and fresh, in short, perfectly balanced. Especially in 2024, a vintage that is not very productive but...

The "little cuvée fruity" from a BIO domaine that is rising in a nearly unknown appellation... high-altitude "haute couture" gamays that the Troigros brothers, triple Michelin-starred, discovered before us ;-) Ah! This juicy fruit and slightly peppery finish!

90/100 RVF. 92/100 Castaing/Parker. The ancestor of "pet-nat" (for pétillant naturel) so popular today, as a "natural" alternative to sometimes heavily sulfited champagnes. An example of the best in this "no additives" category, thanks to the late Jacky Blot and his decades of experience, fortunately passed on to his children to refine the quality!

A lovely chenin marked by roundness and balance. A very pure expression of the Anjou terroir.

96/100 B+D. Undoubtedly the greatest cuvée of Chinon at the moment, perhaps alongside the Croix Boissée from Bernard Baudry. Be cautious, this is a great wine for aging; it would be a shame to taste it too early. Still too young in 2025, best to forget it in the cellar for a few years if possible.

A blend of Protected Designations of Origin from the Loire Valley, vinified by some of the best local winemakers. Six white wines carefully selected for your immediate enjoyment. They come from three complementary grape varieties of the region, renowned for their aging potential but that you won't need to wait for: these are cuvées that are very...

A (rare) cuvée of exceptional whites, like most of the wines from Miolanne :-). We fell for this atypical and exotic blend, yet so balanced and charming, of chardonnay, pinot gris, and gewurztraminer. A very grapefruit-like attack with a more lemony finish, and a well-balanced ensemble in a very fresh vintage. Very volcanic!

Superb Loire Sauvignon at a knockout price given its quality, which easily rivals the illustrious neighboring AOPs Sancerre and Menetou-Salon, certainly more prestigious, but also much more expensive at the same quality. A real bargain.

94/100 B+D. "The other Coteau de Noiré"... The vines of this parcel were a bit too young, but their potential was such that the winemakers warned us: "one day you will see". With each new vintage, this cuvée amazes us a little more... and its price is getting closer to the illustrious Coteau, its elder... But we are still far from the prices of other...

Made from the pinot gris grape variety in accordance with the tradition of Reuilly rosés, a "gris" with a beautiful pale salmon-colored appearance that will captivate with its deliciousness. This domaine is experiencing a true renaissance following its acquisition three vintages ago by a new, ambitious winemaker. Already certified High Environmental Value...
