Sylvain Pataille and his Marsannay from Burgundy

sylvain-pataille-bourgogne-aligote-marsannayIt is in the "small" appellations like Marsannay that we find this ancestral solidarity between winemakers who allowed Sylvain Pataille, oenologist-consultant recognized for his talent as winemaker throughout the Côte du Nuits (notably at Chateau de la Tour, In Clos Vougeot) to settle down ...

Indeed, the story of Sylvain Pataille, rising star of Cote de Nuits, shows that in Marsannay-la-Cote, we know how to stick ones elbows between neighbors. At a time when land is increasingly scarce and expensive in Burgundy, Sylvain Pataille has managed to realize his dream. From a single hectare (rented!) In 1999, its domain has grown to two hectares in 2000 and four hectares in 2001. 2002 saw a big evolution with the passage to ten hectares and especially the arrival of beautiful plots . Today he is the proud owner of 14 hectares of vines, on the same land that saw him born.

Sylvain Pataille takes care of his vines with an unusual ardor. He says it himself: a similar evolution in a few years, "it uses a man". But his hard work paid off. Today, Sylvain Pataille produces some of the best wines of Marsannay appellation. Since the arrival of his brother in the exploitation, and thanks to the intervention of competent assistants, Pataille was able in 2008 to get organic certification and to try out biodynamics.

He speaks of breeding as a "continuity of the vine". He does not like to "rush the vegetal", and defines himself as a conductor more than a musician, even if he modestly adds that he says it "to make the fool". "It is not you who must guide what is already programmed, it is the climate, it is the year, it is the plant, we must only try to express what comes out of it. Magic fruit, a fruit capable of mimicry, to reproduce all the aromas that surround it. [...] I do not like to change the vintage. "

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Neal Martin - déc. 2015) : I have to say, it is the whites that really took my fancy in 2014... and not necessarily Chardonnay. Check out some really wonderful Bourgogne Aligoté from Sylvain that are solid evidence that this variety can produce wines every bit as entrancing as Chardonnay. Sylvain here takes it to a new level with some fascinating terroir-specific bottlings that I had not tasted before. Indeed, I liked most of Sylvain's whites, though the entry-level reds seemed to lack a little substance and density. It was only once you started rifling through the likes of his top Marsannays such as the L'Ancestral and Clos du Roi that they began delivering the complexity and personalities expressed by the whites. Still, as ever, it is great to see a Marsannay producer putting Marsannay on the map.
