Alphonse Mellot, one of the best estates in Sancerre

alphonse-mellot-sancerre-loireAlphonse Mellot produces high-end Sancerre in Center Loire. The white wines are produced with sauvignon blanc, the reds with pinot noir. Alphonse Mellot is the only estate in Sancerre to obtain the maximum score of 5 * / 5 in the 2020 Betanne + Desseauve wine guide.

Among the Mellots, the first name Alphonse is king: like the vines, it is transmitted from generation to generation. The archives date back to 1513 and bear witness to the Mellot family, wine and their attachment to the land of Sancerre for 5 centuries. The end of the 80s marked a turning point in the history of the domain with the creation by Alphonse Mellot Senior of "Domaine de la Moussière". Today Alphonse "Junior" (son of Alphonse Mellot), 19th generation, and his daughter Emmanuelle are in charge. Generation XIX cuvee is witness to this impressive family transmission.
The estate covers 30 ha and is used for organic and biodynamic cultivation. Established on Kimmeridgian marls (as in Chablis), clay soil with flint and limestone, it is the only Sancerre vineyard to obtain the prestigious mention "except competition".
Great care is given to the vine: respect for the soil, low yields, manual harvesting. The vinification is done "burgundy style" (in the same style as Vincent Pinard in Sancerre) and allows fine and very pure wines to be obtained. The wines are aged in the magnificent vaulted underground cellars, a place steeped in history, which has seen almost 20 generations of winemakers and hundreds of vintages.
The exceptional quality of this vineyard has largely contributed to the world fame of the domain.
