Chateauneuf du pape, ventoux, gigondas, les meilleurs vins du Rhône

Great Wines of the Southern Rhône Valley

The Southern Rhône is also referred to as ‘méridional’ (southern), as opposed to the Northern Rhône, known as ‘septentrional’ (northern). This distinction is mainly based on terroirs, grape varieties and, therefore, appellations.

Red wines from the southern Rhône:

In the south (Côtes du Rhône villages, Rasteau, Ventoux, Gigondas, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, among others), it is the Grenache/Syrah/Mourvèdre trilogy (GSM, as the Americans call it) that dominates the blends.

White wines from the southern Rhône:

In the south, Viognier is also present but in smaller proportions, leaving more room for Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Roussanne, Clairette, etc.

The other "little" Côtes du Rhône from Stéphane Ogier, primarily Grenache to differ from the illustrious "Syrah d'Ogier". The quality-price ratio becomes indecent, but don't expect a light "little" Côtes du Rhône... This is truly a superb southern Rhône that can be kept for 5 years.

A fresh syrah with aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and violet with peppery notes. We fell for its finesse, especially at this price!

94/100 J. Dunnuck. A complex Cairanne, with notes of spices, ripe fruits, leather, and flowers, highlighted by silky and fine tannins. Perhaps one of the most emblematic cuvées of the appellation. Best to keep in the cellar for some time, as it is still quite young upon its release from the domaine in October 2025.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate  (Y. Castaing, sept. 2024) : 93/100. Aromas of roses, dark cherries, flowers and garrigue preface the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos du Mont Olivet, a medium to full-bodied, layered and textured wine with a dense, fleshy core of fruit, supported by an abundance of sweet, velvety tannins that pave the way to a long,...

Superb quality at an affordable price... In its youth, this cuvée with good aging potential and well-present tannins deserves to be aerated in a decanter, but its dominant wood/syrah gives it a very nice bouquet right from bottling, to blossom into smoothness in the following years. A safe bet from Ventoux. If possible, forget it in the cellar and prefer...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Yohan Castaing, sept. 2024) : 97/100. Despite a hailstorm that destroyed approximately one-third of the crop this year, Paul-Vincent Avril managed to produce a wine with the same grape proportions as in previous years, thanks to his vineyard's diverse and fragmented nature. So, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos des...
