Rene Rostaing, one of the best winemakers in Cote Rotie.

pierre-et-rene-rostaing-cote-rotie-rhoneRene Rostaing is famous all over the world for his Cote Rotie (Ampodium, Cote Blonde, La Landonne) and Condrieu (La Bonnette). He also produces wine in Languedoc, at Puech Noble. However, only few French get to taste his wines. The reason is simple: because of the very good reviews given by Robert Parker, only very few bottles are available for the French market ...

Rene Rostaing is not only an excellent winemaker, he is also a friendly and engaging man. In his modest house in Ampuis, (just next to the less discreet Guigal) he produces each of his wines alone (a few thousand bottles produced).

Modesty, small team ... this is probably why it is so dufficult to find his wines in France. Feeling more comfortable in his vines or his cellar sharing his passion, he does not have time (or does not need) to look for more exposure. Critics have sent the main importers from all over the world to him, and the production is not high enough to satisfy the demand.

We admire his wines as much as his  straightforward and uncomplicated personality. Only one regret: it is impossible -for now- to propose vintages "good to drink now" from the estate (our only source of supply), because each new vintage of each wine is sold entirety soon after it is bottled ... and unfortunately, it is often opened and drunk too early in the best restaurants around the world. Luckily the Languedocs will enable us to wait patiently for the Cote Rotie to be ready to drink.

For those who are curious, we are also fortunate to have some boxes of a "personal whim" of the winemaker, which is also an involuntary demonstration of his talent: the Puech Noble 100% Mourvedre, produced in 2010 (very beautiful vintage) in less than 1,000 bottles. The lovers of this powerful grape variety will appreciate the sweetness ... and will regret the rarity!
