Vin Jaune and the Great Terroirs of Jura
Jura is one of France's most distinctive wine regions. Best known for its legendary Vin Jaune, it also produces outstanding white and red wines from indigenous grape varieties and unique terroirs.
Our selection showcases the region's most iconic appellations, notably Château-Chalon and Côtes du Jura, through the wines of the renowned Domaine Jean Macle.
Vin Jaune
Vin Jaune is unlike any other wine. It is produced from the Savagnin grape variety and aged for at least six years in oak barrels without topping up. During maturation, a natural yeast veil forms on the wine's surface, protecting it from oxidation while creating its distinctive character.
This unique ageing process gives Vin Jaune its hallmark aromas of walnut, dried fruits and exotic spices such as curry, saffron and ginger. At the end of ageing, the wine is bottled in a clavelin, the traditional 62 cl bottle specific to Vin Jaune.
This method of production provides an exceptional ageing potential, often measured in decades. Château-Chalon is considered the flagship appellation for Vin Jaune, although it is also produced in Arbois, L'Étoile and Côtes du Jura.
White Wines of Jura
Jura also produces remarkable dry white wines made primarily from Savagnin and Chardonnay. Depending on the ageing method, these wines may display a fresh, fruit-driven style or develop more complex oxidative characteristics under a veil of yeast.
Red Wines of Jura
Jura red wines are produced from Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir. They are appreciated for their freshness, elegance and distinctive personality within the French wine landscape.
Domaine Jean Macle
A benchmark estate in Jura, Domaine Jean Macle is particularly renowned for its Château-Chalon wines and traditional sous-voile ageing. Its wines are among the most sought-after by enthusiasts of Vin Jaune and fine Jura wines.
