Gamay and the Great Terroirs of Beaujolais

Discover our selection of Beaujolais Cru wines, crafted by some of the region's most talented winemakers. From Morgon to Moulin-à-Vent, via Fleurie, Juliénas and Saint-Amour, Beaujolais produces some of France's most sought-after red wines.

Made primarily from Gamay, these wines are renowned for their freshness, expression of terroir and remarkable ability to combine immediate drinking pleasure with ageing potential.

The great wines of Beaujolais are predominantly single-varietal wines. Most are red wines produced from Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc, a grape variety that is almost exclusive to the region: of the 36,000 hectares of Gamay planted worldwide, more than 20,000 hectares are located in Beaujolais.

Chardonnay, which now covers just over 200 hectares, produces white wines with aromas of fresh fruit and white flowers.

Map of Beaujolais Crus

Beaujolais is characterised by its hillside vineyards, densely planted and pruned short in the Crus and Beaujolais-Villages appellations. The longer Guyot pruning method is generally used for wines produced under the generic Beaujolais appellation.

All Beaujolais wines are protected by the French Appellation d’Origine Protégée (AOP) system.

The traditional vinification of Beaujolais red wines is generally carried out using whole-cluster fermentation and the principles of semi-carbonic maceration. Fermentation times vary according to the appellation and the style of wine sought by the winemaker.

The Ten Beaujolais Crus

With ageing potential ranging from 7 to 10 years, the Beaujolais Crus represent the finest expressions of the region.

They can be listed alphabetically or geographically by following the course of the Saône River from south to north.

Located mainly on granite soils, these crus each display a distinctive personality. From south to north, Brouilly is followed by Côte de Brouilly, then Régnié, Morgon, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Moulin-à-Vent, Chénas, Juliénas and finally Saint-Amour, which marks the northern boundary of Beaujolais near the Mâconnais region.

Produced north of Belleville-sur-Saône, each cru benefits from its own combination of exposure, terroir and microclimate.

Saint-Amour (320 ha)

The northernmost cru of Beaujolais. Its stony clay-and-silica soils produce wines with a slightly violet hue, aromas of cherry liqueur and mignonette flowers, and a supple, harmonious palate.

Juliénas (580 ha)

Neighbouring Saint-Amour, Juliénas displays a deep ruby colour, floral and fruity aromas reminiscent of strawberries and woodland scents, together with a vibrant structure that softens beautifully with age.

Chénas (270 ha)

The rarest of the Beaujolais Crus. It offers a ruby colour tinged with garnet, floral and woody aromas, and a rich, enveloping texture.

Moulin-à-Vent (660 ha)

Deep ruby with purple highlights, Moulin-à-Vent develops aromas of red fruits that evolve towards dried rose petals and spices with age. Structured and powerful, it is one of the region's finest wines for ageing.

Fleurie (870 ha)

Grown on the slopes beneath the famous Madone chapel, Fleurie is known for its elegance, carmine colour and floral aromas of iris, rose and violet.

Chiroubles (360 ha)

The highest-altitude cru of Beaujolais. Its elevated vineyards produce delicate, airy wines with floral aromas of violet, lily of the valley and peony.

Morgon (1,100 ha)

The flagship appellation of Beaujolais. Morgon produces intensely coloured wines with aromas of ripe stone fruits such as cherry and peach. Full-bodied and structured, these wines age particularly well.

Régnié (400 ha)

Bright ruby in colour, Régnié offers aromas of red berries such as blackberry and redcurrant, with a style defined by finesse and balance.

Côte de Brouilly (310 ha)

Produced on the slopes of Mount Brouilly, these wines combine elegance, freshness and structure, with aromas of fresh grapes and a beautifully balanced palate.

Brouilly (1,300 ha)

The southernmost cru of Beaujolais. It produces deeply coloured wines with aromas of red fruits and plum, supported by a generous, vinous texture.

Beaujolais-Villages

Beaujolais-Villages is produced across 38 villages stretching over approximately 30 kilometres, from the southern edge of the Mâconnais to the outskirts of Villefranche-sur-Saône. These wines are ideal for sharing and are appreciated for their fruit-forward character, with aromas of blackcurrant and strawberry, as well as their smooth and harmonious palate.

The Beaujolais Appellation

The Beaujolais appellation encompasses 72 villages located in the southern and eastern parts of the region, on clay-limestone and granite-rich soils. Synonymous with freshness and generosity, Beaujolais wines are authentic, expressive and enjoyable when young, offering floral and fruity aromas with remarkable drinkability.

Côte du Py is a parcel cuvée from Jean Foillard, originating from one of the most illustrious terroirs of Beaujolais. Like in Burgundy, it is a very specific climate that gives Morgon its reputation and, in great years, produces a few rare bottles of the exceptional cuvée "3.14" (which will be released after a long aging at the domaine). Note that upon...

96/100 RVF. Les impénitents is, for us, the best that Morgon has to offer... and therefore in Beaujolais. What a shame that this cuvée is produced in such limited quantities! Its price becomes a bit exaggerated, but that's the law of supply and demand... One piece of advice, forget it for a few years in the cellar, you will be impressed by the result....

The little gems of six winemakers from Beaujolais. 6 bottles and different climates: Morgon (Foillard and Desvignes, different styles), Brouilly (Lapalu), Beaujolais (Lapierre), Fleurie (Passot at La Grosse Pierre) and Saint-Amour (Lotrous at Sources d'Agapè). Discover the finesse of the best Gamay Noir with white juice!

Pauline Passot was a sommelier in one of the largest restaurants in Lyon... then she succumbed to a return to her family roots. Today, with her exceptional terroirs, she outrageously dominates her AOP and captivates us as much with her talent as with her dynamism. A huge future for Grosse Pierre (it reminds us of Basque strength competitions ;-) and the...

The "simple" Morgon from Jean Foillard, bursting with fruit and freshness, is an ideal gamay to enjoy while patiently waiting for the cuvées to reveal themselves over time. The 2023 is already accessible upon its release from the winemaker's cellars in May 2025, and you can even open it before the 2022, a more robust vintage.

This Fleurie by Foillard is undoubtedly the best in this appellation, more accessible in its youth than its neighbor Morgon. Nevertheless, upon their release from the winemaker's cellars in November 2025, these 2023s were still quite closed and deserved a few weeks (months?) of refinement before tasting.

Born from the superb climate of Corcelette in the Morgon appellation, this cuvée is indulgent and very representative of the climate from which it originates (all in delicacy). It may be the only one alongside the Voûte that can be enjoyed without waiting. Of course, like any respectable Morgon, it also has great years ahead of it.

A very beautiful climate of Morgon isolated in a cuvée that is crunchy and fruity from the start, always refined as is typical of Corcelette. However, it can age for a few years without deteriorating, quite the opposite. In fact, when they are released from the winemaker's cellars in November 2025, these 2023s were still quite closed and deserved a few...

A juicy Saint-Amour that showcases the fruit of gamay. The first from this AOP that we are so fond of, unanimously selected alongside its big brothers, "Côte de Besset" and "Mont Besset". This young winemaker, extremely serious, is destined for a great future. It's certain. If only he could produce a bit more in the future, for now his few vines won't be...

A Morgon bursting with fruit (and simply aged in tank) that will awaken the taste buds of everyone (even those most hostile to Beaujolais!). Douby is perhaps the most delicate climat of the AOC Morgon.

91/100 RVF. Each cuvée from a specific parcel is perfectly representative of the terroir from which it originates. Grille Midi emphasizes power: it is the cuvée full of sunshine, derived from very vieilles vignes ideally situated on pink granite, with aging in 600-liter demi-muids for 1 year. In short, this cuvée is the nec plus ultra of the domaine,...

A major wine from Beaujolais, simply put, that can be kept for a few years, but like all great wines, it is already enjoyable in its youth.
