Northern Rhône appellations: Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Condrieu, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage and Saint-Péray

Syrah, Viognier and the Great Terroirs of Northern Rhône

The Northern Rhône, or Rhône Septentrional, produces some of the most sought-after wines in France. From Côte-Rôtie to Hermitage, through Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Cornas and Saint-Péray, this region offers an exceptional concentration of world-class terroirs.

All great red wines of the Northern Rhône are made from Syrah, a grape variety capable of producing deep, structured and age-worthy wines with aromas of violet, black pepper, spices, dark fruits and, with time, leather.

The white wines of the Northern Rhône are based mainly on Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne. Viognier stands alone in Condrieu, while Marsanne and Roussanne produce the great white wines of Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage and Saint-Péray.

The Great Appellations of Northern Rhône

Côte-Rôtie

The Côte-Rôtie appellation covers around 230 hectares on the right bank of the Rhône, around Ampuis. It produces only red wines, made primarily from Syrah, with a small proportion of Viognier permitted. Its extremely steep terraced slopes make mechanisation impossible and contribute to wines of remarkable precision.

The appellation is traditionally divided between two major terroirs: the Côte Brune, more structured and marked by iron-rich mica schist, and the Côte Blonde, more delicate and refined, shaped by gneiss and clay-rich sands. Côte-Rôtie is one of the greatest red wine appellations of the Northern Rhône.

Condrieu

The Condrieu appellation covers around 130 hectares around the village of the same name. It produces exclusively white wines from Viognier. In the finest terroirs, especially around the famous Coteau de Vernon, Condrieu offers rich, expressive wines with aromas of apricot, exotic fruits, white flowers and mineral freshness.

Saint-Joseph

Saint-Joseph stretches along the Rhône for almost 50 kilometres. Larger and more varied than Côte-Rôtie or Hermitage, it produces mainly Syrah-based red wines as well as whites from Marsanne and Roussanne. The best Saint-Joseph wines offer an exciting alternative to neighbouring prestige appellations, combining depth, freshness and elegance.

Crozes-Hermitage

Crozes-Hermitage is the largest appellation in the Northern Rhône. Located on the left bank around Tain-l’Hermitage, it produces red wines from Syrah and white wines from Marsanne and Roussanne. Once considered a more accessible appellation, Crozes-Hermitage now includes outstanding wines thanks to demanding producers such as the Graillot family, the Combier family and Christelle Betton.

Hermitage

Hermitage covers only around 136 hectares on the famous hill of the same name. Legendary terroirs such as Les Bessards, Le Méal, Les Greffieux and Les Rocoules produce Syrah reds of exceptional depth and great white wines from Marsanne and Roussanne. Hermitage ranks among the world’s greatest age-worthy wines.

Cornas

Cornas, located near Valence, is devoted exclusively to red wines made from Syrah. Once known for powerful, austere wines, the appellation has undergone a remarkable revival, producing cuvées that combine depth, energy and finesse. Its decomposed granite soils, locally known as gore, give the wines their distinctive character.

Saint-Péray

Saint-Péray is one of the smallest appellations in the Northern Rhône. It produces only white wines, still or sparkling, from Marsanne and Roussanne. Its limestone and granite soils give rise to rich, expressive and gastronomic dry whites.

This cuvée - part of which was previously in AOP St Joseph - has become the emblem of Christophe Curtat's expertise. A bottle that has become essential for any syrah enthusiast! The 2024 vintage has arrived and it amazed us during the tasting!

The other "little" Côtes du Rhône from Stéphane Ogier, primarily Grenache to differ from the illustrious "Syrah d'Ogier". The quality-price ratio becomes indecent, but don't expect a light "little" Côtes du Rhône... This is truly a superb southern Rhône that can be kept for 5 years.

Domaine Combier Crozes-Hermitage "Cuvee L" red 2025
  • New
Laurent Combier pays particular attention to his "entry-level" wine, the famous cuvée with the purple label (like the characteristic aroma of syrah ;-) that bears his name. Half of it is aged in oval tanks to keep the lees in suspension, enhancing the fruit of the syrah. This cuvée has become a great classic. Released from the cellars of the domaine in...

Even though he vinifies other appellations, Saint-Joseph is the "trademark" of Aurélien Chatagnier. This cuvée has become the "quality/price signature" of this domaine on the rise. A must-try if you are not already a regular! Selected by "Le Monde" in February 2026 as one of the best Saint-Josephs in the Valley!

Stéphane Ogier continues, despite his now immense international fame, to vinify his two "small" wines: "Le Temps est venu" (made from grenache) and this famous "Syrah d'Ogier". Be careful, this is not a "small wine" despite its price; it is aged in oak barrels and will keep for at least 3 or 4 years in a good cellar! We particularly enjoyed it in 2023.

A white wine made from 100% Roussanne (therefore well-balanced between fruit, roundness, and liveliness) by Cuilleron: all in lightness and finesse.

A very accomplished Crozes Hermitage, yet this is only the 5th vintage of this young winemaker at 29 years old with a bright future. He is, by the way, the cellar master at Jean-Louis Chave... does that ring a bell? Typically, these Crozes claim a few years of aging... and they fully deserve it.

A box set bringing together some of the most remarkable wines from these two appellations neighbouring the legendary Côte-Rôtie. We have chosen to offer Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage wines that are ‘accessible’ and ready to enjoy within the next 5 years, rather than prestige vintages intended for collectors who stockpile them by the case for decades...

We fell in love with this indulgent Crozes with notes of violet and red fruits, which will delight fans of beautiful northern syrahs. This perfectly balanced 2023 vintage can be enjoyed before the powerful 2022s, which need a bit more time to mellow.
