Domaine de la Taille aux Loups "Bretonniere" dry white 2022

One of the finest plots in the Vouvray appellation, but no longer entitled to the appellation... as it is vinified in Montlouis, just a few hundred meters away. A unique terroir and exposure for one of the greatest Chenins of the Loire, full of tension, with excellent aging potential.

Domaine de la Taille aux Loups "Bretonnière" 2022 dry white wine

Preliminary note: for several vintages now, the "Clos de la Bretonnière, Protected Designation of Origin Vouvray" has been replaced by the Vin de France "Bretonnière". However, these are the same grapes, located in the same place, managed by the same winemaker. They are also vinified in the same location: at Jacky Blot in Montlouis. This is where the issue arises: Montlouis is located on the other side of the Loire, just a few hundred meters away. The administrative rule has changed, so no more designation for wines from these parcels that are still within the appellation.

The amusing aspect of this very French administrative story is that the appellation Vouvray may lose perhaps its greatest wines with "Bretonnière" and "Venise" from Taille aux Loups, not to mention the two other great cuvées "Baudouin" and "Argiles" from François Chidaine, another star of Montlouis who vinifies at home and owns parcels "across", whose wines have been downgraded for the same reason!

Descriptive sheet written by the domaine:

Cuvée Parcellaire:
Wine from one of the most beautiful clos of the Vouvray appellation. Limestone almost outcropping, small cover of very rich clays, south/east orientation.

Aging:
Barrels: 1/6 new, 5/6 from 1 to 5 wines for one year (bottling in autumn).

Tasting:
The character speaks. Incredible precision of the chenin at its peak of flavors. Words fail.

Food and wine pairings:
Cooked shellfish, sauced fish, asparagus, white meats, savory pastries, goat cheeses.

Presentation of the appellation written by the domaine:

Soils: The vineyard covers the stony hills on a tuffeau substrate (white chalk from the Turonian) interspersed with confluencing valleys and covered with "perruche" (clays with flint that give the mineral character) and "d'aubuis" (argilo-calcareous that provide the power of sweet wines).

Climate: On the edge of confluencing valleys, the soils warm quickly under the oceanic influence, which weakens at this level of the Loire that penetrates into the heart of the vineyard. Sunny autumns favor over-ripeness and even noble rot. The production of semi-dry, sweet, or liquorous wines depends on climatic variability: the vintage effect is decisive.

Vineyard: the entire vineyard, whether the vines are in the Montlouis-sur-Loire appellation or in the Vouvray appellation, rests on a limestone bedrock. This deposit from the upper turonian (the last period of the Cretaceous at the end of the secondary era) dates back about 100 million years and forms in Montlouis-sur-Loire an inclined plateau towards the South.
