Clos du Mont-Olivet Lirac "Marie Jausset" red 2022
RVF Guide to the Best Wines of France 2025 (August 2024): 92/100. In Lirac, we have a preference for the cuvée Marie Jausset, which has a superior mouthfeel and tannic structure. However, the wine could be a bit finer.
Technical sheet written by the domaine:
PRELUDE
This cuvée was born from our desire to highlight the terroir of this magnificent CRU with a wine that will stand the test of time... Parcel selection followed by the best vats in our cellars, it is the "echo" of our "Cuvée du Papet". A tribute to our great-grandmother "MARIE JAUSSET", heir to the vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and thanks to whom the history of the Domaine began at the beginning of the last century.
VINTAGE
“A fine and vibrant vintage”
Beautiful yields and excellent quality of wines characterize the 2022 vintage in the Gard.
The 2022 growing season began with a relatively mild spring, leading to an early bud break.
The early, dry, and hot summer that followed resulted in consistently above-average temperatures. The stormy rains of August 16 in the Gard, followed by the Mistral wind, allowed for harvesting the grapes at good maturity starting September 9.
The 2022 vintage is considered among the best of the last decade.
With high aging potential and extremely fine tannins, Marie Jausset 2022 is emblematic of its Gard terroir and captivates with its elegance, aromas of garrigue, and intense fruit.
TERROIR
Our vines are located in the municipalities of Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres and Saint-Génies-de-Comolas on the right bank of the Rhône. The parcels are spread across the lieux-dits "Les Cosses", "Caveyrac", and "Montcau". The soils are very rich in Pliocene sands, with some parcels featuring red silica mixed with scattered pebbles, remnants of the Urgonian period. This terroir imparts depth and freshness to the wines.
VINIFICATION
The grapes are hand-harvested, with a very strict sorting to select only the best berries. The choice of harvest date is essential to be as precise as possible regarding ripeness. The vinification is then conducted with some pump-overs and rackings without seeking maximum extraction. Press juice and free-run juice are aged separately in concrete tanks and then blended after a few months and stored in tanks and barrels. The percentage of containers varies according to the profile of the vintage.
Fermentation: 100% in concrete tank
Aging: 100% foudre
BLEND
50% Grenache noir, 40% Mourvèdre, 10% Cinsault
