Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2012 signed by Clos du Mont-Olivet

RVF Guide to the Best Wines of France 2015: 17/20. The simple Châteauneuf du Pape, always intense in its aromatic palette, has a fine yet deeply sculpted mouth.

Bettane + Desseauve Guide 2015: 15/20. Much precision on the nose, without heaviness compared to last year but with even more freshness and complexity; the tannin has not yet found its perfect balance. Peak: 2020 to 2022.

The Wine Review of France (Oct. 2014): Graceful nose, very elegant with a floral touch and a scent of whole grape harvest. It evolves on a citrus note. Mouth with relief and beautiful energy. There is muscle but accompanied by a sensation of full and dense fruit.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Jeb Dunnuck, Oct. 2014): 89/100. The 2012 Châteauneuf du Pape is a mid-weight, medium-bodied effort that has complex olive, tobacco leaf, cured meats, and sweet currant fruit. A blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 6% Mourvèdre, and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, aged in a combination of concrete, foudre, tank, and small barrels, it has building tannin and a classical, balanced feel on the palate, but I'd still love a smidge more concentration. Nevertheless, it's borderline outstanding and I suspect it will have over a decade of longevity. Drink 2014 - 2024

Technical Sheet written by the domaine:

Vintage:
The South of the Rhône Valley was one of the few regions to benefit from exceptional climatic conditions. Great sunshine and a generally very dry climate allowed for the harvest of grapes in perfect sanitary condition. The rains at the end of August helped to perfect the quality of grapes in certain plots suffering from water stress. The profile of the wines, rather round and fruity for the early harvested plots, evolved towards spicy notes at the end of the harvest, thus providing an interesting palette for blends.

Terroir: The grapes come from very varied Lieux-dits: Montalivet, La Crau, Les Blachières, Coste Froide, Bois Seneseau, Palestor, Bois Dauphin, Pied de Baud, Les Bousquets, Les Parrans, Les Marines, Le Bois de la Ville, Cansaud, Les Gallimardes, and Les Serres. They stretch from north to south of the appellation. The soils are mainly composed of colluviums of quartzite, marine clays, sands, and molassic sandstones.

Vinification: The tanks are filled by gravity with partial destemming. The work on the wines is done without seeking maximum extraction but rather prioritizes elegance and freshness. The free-run and press juices are aged separately, mainly in concrete tanks where they undergo malolactic fermentation. After blending, aging continues in foudres.
