Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre "Génération DIX-NEUF" red 2018
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Stephan Reinhardt, January 2022): 91/100. The 2018 Sancerre Génération Dix-Neuf (XIX) Rouge is pure and fleshy on the meaty, elegant and pretty reductive nose that reveals dark fruit and licorice aromas reminiscent of plums, blackcurrant, iodine and blood. Smooth and round on the palate, this is a dense, juicy, very elegant and refined Sancerre red with fleshy, ripe cherry aromas, fine tannins and a smooth and sweet finish. Too much for my personal taste, but Manx wine lovers would love this style. 14.5% stated alcohol. Diam cork. Tasted in December 2021. Drink date: 2023-2030.
Technical sheet written by the domaine:
Here, the vines are old. Deeply rooted, they draw their knowledge from the soil and subsoil. The minerality then blends with the fruit and the wine, in a rich and complex polygamous marriage.
A true explosion of flavors, it must elevate the expression of Pinot Noir on our Sancerre land.
Tasting notes:
Ask it anything, it can give you everything…
A beautiful ruby color, dense and deep - Ripe appearance.
The nose is rich and complex.
Everything is seduction in this wine, with culture and precision added. It captures for us blackberry, blueberry, and sour cherry, offering on a backdrop of freshness the spices from the East: pink pepper, vanilla, and cinnamon.
The palate is seduction and fullness
Harmony prevails. The attack on the palate is powerful, generous: it envelops and coats. The fruits and spices accompany a superb oak with ripe tannins.
A great wine...
Food/wine pairings: Eggs in meurette, fricassee of mushrooms, eel stew à la Charentaise, pike-perch and catfish fillet à la vigneronne, rock mullet with eggplant caviar, Charolais beef heart with marrow, wild boar chops grilled over vine shoots, cow's milk cheeses aged or not, pears in wine and pepper sorbet with chocolate mousse...
Serving temperature: 14 to 16°C for the pleasure of tasting and 14 to 18°C with food.
Harvest:
The Cuvée Génération is made from a 62-year-old parcel (Chambratte and Paradis).
The harvest is done in small crates of 25 kg. All the grapes were sorted using a vibrating table followed by a sorting table and transported destemmed into the tanks by conveyor. The maceration takes place in a conical wooden vat of 45 hl.
Surface: 1 ha
Grape variety: Pinot Noir.
Exposure: Southeast.
Geology:
Soil: Saint-Doulchard marls (pebbles).
Subsoil: Upper Kimmeridgian.
Planting density: 10,000 vines/ha
Viticulture:
The vines are pruned in simple Guyot.
The vineyard is managed under organic and biodynamic cultivation.
Vinification:
A cold maceration: 8 to 12 days, then fermentation begins.
During this period, very light punch downs and pump overs are performed (about once a day).
Fermentation temperatures do not exceed 28°C to preserve all the aromas of Pinot Noir.
The maceration lasts on average 4 weeks.
A gentle pressing follows a decantation on a conveyor.
The press juices are incorporated with the free-run juice or vinified separately. After settling, all the juices are placed directly into barrels for malolactic fermentation.
Aging is done in new barrels for an average of 14 months.
The production of the Cuvée Génération is 2,800 bottles.
Bottling is done by us at the estate.
