Domaine Trapet Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru "Clos Prieur" red 2022

Guide RVF des Meilleurs Vins de France 2025 (Sept. 2024): 95/100. Three superb premiers crus from Gevrey Chambertin: Clos Prieur, silky, fleshy, and full of vitality, sprinkled with citrus peels.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (William Kelley, January 2024) : 92-94/100. One of Trapet's more structured premiers crus this year is the 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Prieur, a medium to full-bodied, deep and textural wine redolent of plums, rose petals, orange zest, and licorice. Built around a chassis of powdery tannin, it concludes with an expansive finish.

Technical sheet written by the domaine:

“We are the spiritual sons of the old terroirs. Our soul has received the nobility and the torment of familiar expanses made by human hands.” Gaston Roupnel.

Grape variety: Pinot noir

Area: 40 ares, 2 plots

A few rows from the Grands Crus, our premiers crus Petite Chapelle and Clos Prieur rival in finesse and grace with their prestigious cousins. These are the oldest terroirs of the domaine. In 1877, just before the invasion of phylloxera, my great-great-grandfather decided to acquire a plot near the Grande Chapelle, this land was then called Ergot or Petite Chapelle. Ironically, the same year, the French vines planted at the incredible density of 35,000 feet per hectare were attacked by a small beetle that the winemakers named écrivain or gribouri. The harvest of Ergot was then drastically reduced to six pieces.

But what a delicious wine! Arthur, my great-grandfather aged 10, remembered this wine with emotion. But above all, he retained the pride with which his father sold this nectar in the autumn of 1881 at the astronomical price of 480 francs per piece! A few years later, in 1893, while some vines were already being replanted with American rootstocks, Louis bought “his Clos Prieur” near the Mazis. Was it the name with monastic evocations or rather its stony, light, and well-drained soil that decided my great-grandfather? We do not know, but whatever he decided, Louis was particularly well inspired.

That same year, during the Exposition Générale des Vins, which precedes the famous Sale of the Hospices de Beaune, the fruit of his first grafted vines was applauded by his winemaker friends and enthusiasts from all over the Côte!

Today, our old terroirs of Premiers crus, this Petite Chapelle and this Clos Prieur make us believe that mystically man possesses the soil he occupies. In fact, the soil possesses man and this property, a force elaborated in common, is reciprocal and inalienable!
