Technical sheet written by the domaine :
And if paradise were terrestrial?
The Chapelle would undoubtedly be its cellar!
The ancients called it the great Chapelle or high Chapelle, one of the smallest grand crus of Gevrey is also one of the greatest in complexity and finesse. Its history is marked by devotion!
Grape variety: Pinot noir
Area: 60 ares, 1 parcel the oldest planted in 1945
Just a stone's throw from Clos de Bèze, there once stood a small oratory. Built in 1155 and dedicated to Our Lady, it fell into disuse in the 14th century. The sadness of the winemakers was great, and this chapel was then rebuilt and consecrated again on July 4, 1457. The pious assembly gathered around Bishop Philibert de Beaujeu raised the fruits of their labor towards paradise.
It took work, perseverance, and courage for our grandfather Louis. But he would need even more to acquire this beautiful parcel of Chapelle: this more is called friendship. Around 1890, our grandfather from Chambolle-Musigny met Mr. Truchetet. This mechanical enthusiast, a genius handyman, had developed an injector to asphyxiate phylloxera with carbon sulfide. At that time, phylloxera was severely affecting Burgundy. The fight was organized. Louis Trapet quickly understood the importance of uprooting the vieilles vignes françaises and replanting them with an American rootstock resistant to the insect's bites. His old friend, the "sulfurist," persisted in believing in the virtues of chemistry. The reconstitution of the Côte d’Or vineyard was then prohibited with American plants. No matter! Louis went out at night to fetch his grafts at the Chagny station in Saône et Loire and planted this Chapelle vine by day.
The old pinots noirs are saved!
Even today, these old "quelles" deliver the sap of their terroir. From this warm, shallow, and well-drained terroir, composed of fine clays and limestone blocks at the surface, fine, rich, and expressive wines are born. And as our grandfather said:
This chapel is the “ little Jesus ” that descends into your throat in velvet pants!
