Château Pesquié Ventoux "Quintessence" red 2020

91/100 RVF. Superb quality at an affordable price... In its youth, this cuvée with good aging potential and well-present tannins deserves decanting, but its wood/syrah dominance gives it a lovely bouquet right from bottling, evolving into a velvety texture in the following years. A sure bet from Ventoux. Best to forget it in the cellar if possible.

Château Pesquié Ventoux "Quintessence" red 2020

RVF Guide to the Best Wines of France 2023 (Sept. 2022): 91/100. For the reds in 2020, Quintessence is a serious wine, based on quality material that we still need to wait for.

Hachette Guide 2023 (Oct 2022): 2*/3 (remarkable wine): Long maceration, gentle extraction of tannins, careful aging of 15 months in new barrels, this cuvée has received all the attention. In the glass, the dark hue reveals the predominance of Syrah (80%), which has also left its olfactory mark: blueberry, tapenade, licorice stick. Powerful, elegant, and velvety at the same time, the palate extends this aromatic complexity, well framed by tight tannins highlighted by a fine acidity. We do not fear forgetting it for a few years in the cellar.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Joe Czerwinski, May 2024): 93/100. The 2020 Ventoux Quintessence is the typical blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Grenache, aged in a mix of concrete, demi-muids, and barrels. Scents of licorice, wood spice, and vanilla join mixed berries on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is lush and creamy in texture, with a long, supple finish. While perhaps a touch modern in style, it offers an undeniably appealing marriage of freshness and power. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. DRINK DATE 2023-2035.

Technical sheet written by the domaine:

Description
: The Chaudière family has been crafting "Quintessence" since 1990 and chose this name to highlight the notion of exception and concentration of this cuvée. Powerful and complex but with superb balance and beautiful freshness, this wine is the result of a drastic parcel selection.

Terroir : Clay-limestone soils at an altitude of 250 to 350 meters.

Grapes : 80% Syrah - 20% old Grenache (vines of 50 years and older). Yield between 30 and 35 hl/hectare.

Vinification and aging : The harvest is crushed and destemmed. Macerations of three to four weeks, air pumping over. Aging for 12 to 15 months in barrels: 40% in new wood and 60% in wood of two or three years. Bottled at the château.

Tasting : Color: dark purple. Aroma: Black fruits (cherry, morello), garrigue, roasting aromas, and black olive. Palate: very broad structure, richness and power balanced by the freshness of the Ventoux terroir, notes of garrigue, black cherry with silky tannins. Concentrated, velvety, and tonic.

Food and wine pairings : Terrines, roasted red meats, sauced meats, game, tuna steak, beef cheek daube, confit duck, moussaka. Cheeses (Brie, Camembert) and possibly desserts based on red fruits and/or chocolate.

Temperature: maximum serving temperature 18° C. Decant in its youth.
