The Domaine de Trévallon is a unique domaine in IGP Alpilles, and buying Trévallon wines is a challenge for the red and a feat for the white, so rare are they, and so unique is their terroir. They do not, in fact, carry the AOP Baux de Provence, as cabernet sauvignon is too “exotic” for tourists :-).

Brief overview of Domaine de Trévallon

- IGP Alpilles rather than Baux de Provence, due to its 50% cabernet sauvignon content (limited to 20% in the Baux AOP), an additional mark of distinction for this resolutely “out of the ordinary” wine.

- 17 ha of vines farmed under organic agriculture and fenced since 2017 to protect them from wild boar.

- Exclusively two great age-worthy wines, one red and one dry white, with no “second” cuvée. These are firmly structured wines that need time before being enjoyed.

- A unique terroir of clay-limestone soils, planted “before everyone else”, out of passion and far removed from any lure of profit!

What is the history of Domaine de Trévallon?

- 1950: The domaine was founded by Jacqueline and René Dürrbach, contemporary artists of Picasso, Léger, Gleizes and Delaunay, following the sale of a tapestry to Rockefeller.

- 1973: Eloi Dürrbach, then an architecture student in Paris, returned to his parents’ domaine and, with his wife Floriane, cleared the land and planted vines.

- 1993: When the AOP Baux de Provence was created, Trévallon remained a “Vin de Pays” because its proportion of cabernet sauvignon was too high.

- 2021: Eloi Dürrbach passed away, and his three children, Ostiane, Isoline and Antoine, took over domaine de Trévallon.

What are the grape varieties and terroirs of Domaine de Trévallon?

- The 12 hectares of red vines are planted with 50% cabernet sauvignon and 50% syrah, with a little cinsault since 2024.

- The 2 hectares of white vines are planted with marsanne (50%), roussanne (30%), grenache (7%), clairette (6%) and chardonnay (6%), Muscat à petits grains (1%).

- The compact limestones (Cretaceous era) are combined with clays, marls, sands, pebbles and glacial cryoclastic scree. A dream setting for the vine, with its due-north exposure!

- All within a preserved ecosystem: varied vegetation (garrigue, olive trees and pines) surrounds the vines, alongside insects, bees, birds... 

- The climate, more Rhône than Mediterranean, gives the syrah an incomparable character, with a pronounced mineral edge, just like the cabernet sauvignon.

Vinification and ageing at Trévallon:

- Harvesting is carried out by hand; whole bunches ferment without destemming, without added yeasts and with no added sulphur.

- The red wines are aged for 2 years in foudres and barrels.

- During ageing: light sulphuring, a few rackings, then blending, with fining using fresh egg whites as in the past, followed by bottling without filtration.

Which wines from Domaine de Trévallon should you buy?

The choice is simple: either Trévallon red or Trévallon white!

Anyone with the opportunity to buy Trévallon white should seize it; it is a unique chance to discover a truly singular wine. Admittedly, such rarity has its price, but no one seems to complain!

Buying the red is easier, but to enjoy everything it has to offer, patience is essential: according to Ostiane Dürrbach, a minimum of 10 years’ cellaring is needed before one can understand the mystery of Trévallon. Indeed, only after a few years can one fully discern the balance, finesse and harmony that Trévallon brings to the accompaniment of a gastronomic meal (Trévallon deserves at least that!)

The reds are made exclusively from cabernet sauvignon and syrah, with a little cinsault (for its peppery character) since the 2024 vintage. The whites are mainly made from marsanne and roussanne, complemented by grenache, clairette and chardonnay.

Which vintages of Trévallon are available?

The only available vintages of Trévallon are the most recent ones, as every bottle is snapped up immediately and the fortunate owners rarely part with them. Alongside the new vintage of the year, the domaine nevertheless releases a few bottles of an older vintage to give newcomers the chance to discover its ageing potential for themselves. Unfortunately, one does not always find what one is looking for in Trévallon, especially in white, bottles that remain highly sought-after even 10 years after release.
