Domaine Miolanne IGP Puy de Dôme "Haka" red 2023
Attention GRANDS GAMAYS! An "extraordinary" cuvée, far above the crowd of wines from the region... like the All Blacks in rugby who inspired the name. This prestigious bottle comes from a terroir of basalt scree beneath the Gergovie plateau, where the very vieilles vignes of 80 to 90 years old yield mini harvests: grapes harvested and vinified in a "haute couture" style. WARNING: For the environment, the domaine has decided to no longer use aluminum capsules (purely aesthetic), but rest assured, the wine is perfectly protected and the tax payments (represented by Marianne) are duly made!

Domaine Miolanne IGP Puy de Dôme "Haka" red 2023
RVF Guide to the Best Wines of France 2026 (Sept. 2025): 89/100. Haka 2023 is particularly ripe for a gamay, with a dense, confit profile that invites drinking young.
Les Echos (July 4, 2025, "the awakening of volcanic wines", by Béatrice Brasseur): "for the Domaine Miolanne of Jean-Baptiste Deroche, who does not hesitate to create ultra-confidential cuvées like Haka, made from very old vines of gamay growing on basalt scree of the Gergovie plateau. He settled on twelve hectares thirteen years ago."
Heading to Auvergne, its 80 volcanoes formed between 65 million and 7000 years BC, with blunt cones and green slopes. Is Auvergne sleepy? Not at all! Energized by the UNESCO World Heritage designation of the Puys-Limagne fault chain, it is a cauldron of ideas and energy. Goal: to make its wines known (1 to 2% of French production), born on basalts, peperites, pumices, and pozzolans. A French and even global exception: over 350 hectares, the Côtes d'Auvergne appellation is the only one to concentrate all types of existing volcanic terroirs. "This characteristic allows for the production of very fruity wines, with great minerality, very fresh with just the right amount of acidity," comments Jean-Baptiste Deroche, oenologist, owner of the domaine Miolanne and president of the Vinora association.
Aromatic bombs for which the international label "Volcanic Origin," registered with the INPI, was launched at the end of June 2025, in Clermont-Ferrand, during the first International Forum of Volcanic Terroir Wines. A creation of Vinora and the Côtes d'Auvergne union.
It follows three scientific studies on the typicity of volcanic wines in Auvergne and France. "The label applies to cuvées, not to domains, which can be established on different types of soils," specifies Jean-Baptiste Deroche. The scientific committee analyzes the core samples provided by the candidate winemakers and ensures that the grapes come from vineyards and volcanic rocks (basalt, trachybasalt, andesite, trachyandesite, trachyte, rhyolite, dacite) or volcanic sedimentary (scoria, pozzolana, epérite, pumice). Two hundred fifty thousand bottles - from Etna, Santorini, Pompeii, the Azores, Auvergne, but also from Provence, Languedoc, Alsace... - have already been labeled and bear the seal. "It's a recognition for producers and a benchmark for consumers. We aim to double that next year," announces the president.
Technical sheet written by the domaine:
Winemaker's comment: In recent years, we have managed to uncover 3 small vineyard plots under the Gergovie plateau on basalt scree. These are very old vines 80 to 90 years old planted at 10,000 vines/hectare (Burgundian style!), in Auvergne gamay. The first harvest was made in the 2022 vintage; everything is done using organic farming. The vines are pampered; we leave 5 bunches per vine to optimize the quality and ripeness of the grapes. As with the rest of our domaine, the harvest is manual. Classic vinification, 4 weeks maceration with indigenous yeasts. Aging for 18 months, 50% of the volume in 228 l and 400 l barrels, the rest in stainless steel tanks. No filtration. This powerful cuvée retains a lot of concentration and freshness thanks to its terroir and grape variety.
