Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape red 2022

RVF Guide to the Best Wines of France 2026 (Sept 2025): 94/100. The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape are successful, with a cuvée from the domaine that is rich, with a beautiful chewiness, ample, built for aging.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Joe Czerwinski, Sept. 2024): 94/100. Matured 100% in foudres, the 2022 Châteauneuf du Pape from Château de Beaucastel evokes aromas of dark wild berries, dark cherries, spices and licorice mingled with a touch of chocolate. Medium to full-bodied, deep and dense, it’s perfectly balanced with a structured, textured and seamless mid-palate enhanced by velvety tannins and a peppery, delicate and long finish. Cesar Perrin is aiming to reduce the percentage of Syrah in favor of Counoise, so this harmonious Beaucastel, matured in foudres, is a blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 10% Counoise, 5% Cinsault, 5% Terret Noir, 5% Muscardin, 5% Vaccarèse and 20% of white grapes, such as Roussanne and Clairette. (drink date: 2024-2044)

Technical sheet written by the domaine:

The vintage: The 2022 vintage experienced contrasting climatic events that allowed for beautiful quality grapes and a very promising aromatic complexity, although with heterogeneous volume depending on the plots. The winter and spring were particularly mild and very dry, with January and May being the driest months since the early 20th century, featuring record temperatures in May and June. These conditions helped maintain excellent health for the vines, thanks to a complete absence of diseases. The summer was then very sunny with high temperatures that suggested potential high alcohol levels, but beneficial rains in mid-August allowed the grapes to continue their maturation gently. Harvest began on August 19 under very favorable signs, 11 days earlier than in 2021. It was punctuated by some rains in September that did not affect the superb quality of the grapes but made a slight sorting necessary in the vineyard. We worked on our rosés with finesse, aiming for elegant, fruity, and low-alcohol wines. The reds were vinified gently, with delicate extractions that promise particularly balanced wines. The first tastings suggest a 2022 vintage full of promise, with complex and aromatic palates and very beautiful balances.

Description
:
Château de Beaucastel has long been considered one of the greatest wines in France and is unanimously renowned for its balance, elegance, and aging potential. Beaucastel has an extraordinary terroir at the northern tip of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, highly exposed to the Mistral. The thirteen grape varieties of the appellation have been cultivated organically since the 1960s.

Location: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, between Orange and Avignon, the Château de Beaucastel rouge is a vineyard of 70 hectares.

Terroir: Château de Beaucastel has about 110 hectares of contiguous land in the northern part of the appellation. The terroir is the archetype of the great terroirs of Châteauneuf: rolled pebbles on the surface, clay, sand, and limestone below. The vines are old, and the organic farming practiced for over 50 years has allowed their roots to dive deep.
Beaucastel cultivates the thirteen grape varieties authorized by the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.

Winemaking: Each grape variety is hand-harvested separately. Vinification occurs in wooden truncated cone tanks for the reductive varieties (Syrah, Mourvèdre) and in traditional concrete and enamelled stone tanks for the oxidative varieties (all others). After malolactic fermentation, the Perrin family blends the different grape varieties, and the wine ages in oak foudres for a year before bottling.

Grape varieties:

  • Cinsault: 5%
  • Counoise: 10%
  • Grenache: 30%
  • Mourvèdre: 30%
  • Syrah: 15%
  • Vaccarèse, Terret Noir, Muscardin, Clairette, Picpoul, Picardan, Bourboulenc, Roussanne: 10%

Service: Around 15°C. If possible, consider decanting the wine.

Tasting: Magnificent bright red color with crimson reflections. Powerful and complex, the nose reveals a superb aromatic bouquet with aromas of ripe red fruits, combined with notes of chocolate, tobacco, and underbrush. Ample and silky, the palate opens with a round attack before revealing its elegant tannic structure, perfectly balanced and very harmonious. A refined wine with remarkable harmony already in place, a sign of beautiful maturity in this particularly warm and dry vintage.
