Châteauneuf-du-Pape Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin red 2018

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
(Joe Czerwinski, Dec 2020): 99/100. Red-fruited and garrigue-laden, the nose of the 2018 Châteauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin is glorious, showing remarkable complexity in its notes of cherries, raspberries and strawberries, all accented by hints of bay leaf, lavender and thyme, plus deeper bass notes of black olives, roasted meat, espresso, star anise and dark chocolate. Full-bodied and intense, it seems to have added structure since last year, with a firm matrix of tannins holding it all together and lingering on the lengthy finish. Put this Mourvèdre-based blend (approximately 60%) away for five or more years; it should drink well for a couple of decades beyond that. Drink date 2025-2045.

La Revue du Vin de France (J-E Simond, March 2025): 96+/100. Voluble, spicy and tonic, it is still quite immature but combines aromatic purity, comfortable volume, richness of sap and a smooth finish.

Technical sheet written by the domaine:

The vintage:
The 2018 vintage is characterized by exceptional climatic conditions. Flowering occurs under the best conditions, with a historically abundant grape yield. A few rainy episodes at the end of spring complicate matters slightly with an attack of mildew, but then fine weather sets in until the harvest, which takes place in idyllic conditions. The wines promise to be magnificent.

Terroir
: Château de Beaucastel has about 110 hectares of contiguous land in the northern part of the appellation. The terroir is the archetype of the great terroirs of Châteauneuf: rolled pebbles on the surface, clays, sands, and limestone below. The vines are very exposed to the mistral. The thirteen grape varieties of the appellation have been cultivated organically for over 50 years, and their great age has allowed their roots to dive deep.

Elaboration: Each grape variety is harvested separately by hand. Vinification takes place in wooden truncated tanks for the reductive grape varieties (Syrah, Mourvèdre) and in traditional concrete and enamelled stone tanks for the oxidative grape varieties (Grenache). After malolactic fermentation, the Perrin family blends the different grape varieties, and then the wine ages in oak foudres for a year before bottling.

Grape varieties: Grenache 30%, Syrah 10%, Mourvèdre 30%, Counoise 10%, Cinsault 5%, various: 15%
