Domaine Michel Redde & fils Fumé de Pouilly "Barre à Mine" dry white 2020

A great Pouilly Fumé, very mineral. Aside from the anecdotal aspect (parcel planted manually, with a crowbar), the soil of such hardness (flint) is rarely used for vines (ask the winemaker about the state of his back after planting!). It proves to be exceptional, as anticipated - and heavily inspired by the domaine Dagueneau, not so far away - after all these efforts, now rewarded!

Domaine Michel Redde & fils Fumé de Pouilly "Barre à Mine" dry white 2020

RVF Guide to the Best Wines of France 2023 (Sept. 2022). 91/100. Barre à Mine 2020 is more slender, straight, emphasizing bitterness on the finish. We have known it to be more fleshy and concentrated.

Technical sheet written by the domaine:

Since 2009, a titanic and unique work has been carried out in an old flint quarry, called "Les Champs des Froids," located in the municipality of Tracy-sur-Loire.
The beautifully South-West exposed plot requires significant clearing, uprooting, and planting work.
Unlike a "classic" preparation, this one is done using a large quarry shovel to uproot the monumental flint blocks called cuirasses. Additionally, we have called upon a specialized company to blast them to make this plot mechanically exploitable.
Currently, 4.5 ha are planted, and the entire planting has been done using a barre à mine, rather than a pickaxe as is usual, at a density of 10,000 vines/ha through mass selection.
This is why, due to all this colossal work, the name of this new and exceptional terroir of the Appellation is called BARRE À MINE.

Grape variety: 100% Sauvignon

Lieu-dit: "Les Champs des froids"

Terroir: Former quarry of red Albian flint, kaolinite clay located in the municipality of Tracy sur Loire.

Yield: 35-40 hl/ha

Vinification: Vinified and aged in large casks and demi-muids for 14 to 16 months on fine lees. Alcoholic fermentation between 18 and 20°c

Tasting: It is recommended to decant it to bring out its pure, spicy, persistent, and saline minerality.

Ageing potential: 15 to 20 years.
