Technical sheet written by the domaine:
Comment from the domaine on the 2022 vintage: The winter was mild and normally watered.
Once again, the frost in early April threatened our vineyard, with temperatures dropping to -4°C for a short period at sunrise, so we escaped the frost. We also changed our pruning method by opting for an ancestral two-stage pruning, delaying the final pruning by a month to stagger the bud break of the vines.
Flowering began at the end of May, on May 26, and lasted for 10 days, with cool morning temperatures and a constant wind, leading to fertilization issues in the grapes that we find in our millerand grapes.
Spring and summer will be remembered as among the hottest and driest since the famous year 1976. Three intense heat waves marked the vineyard in July and August with temperatures nearing 39°C to 40°C.
We experienced a first hail episode on May 4.
A violent storm with wind tornadoes and tropical rains struck Gevrey on June 22 at 3 PM, with 50 mm of rain falling in one hour. The cellars were flooded, as was the church in Gevrey. The episode was classified as a natural disaster.
The soil from the vineyards washed down into the village.
However, this created a good water reserve that helped the vines better cope with the drought of spring and summer. The most affected area in Gevrey was the 1er Cru sector, Lavaux, Champeaux, and the vines at the foot of the Gevrey 1er Crus. The plain vines were relatively spared.
The dry season did not allow diseases to manifest; downy mildew, podium, and rot were absent this year.
These extreme drought conditions marked the vines. The hillside vines and the vieilles vignes coped well with the lack of water due to their deep rooting, allowing them to seek water in the soil.
On the other hand, the young vines or those located in draining stony soils suffered. We can observe leaf loss at the level of the clusters, grapes scorched by the heat, scratches, and transformed into mummies. This is a defense mechanism of the vine that goes into survival mode to try to save its fruits.
We decided not to leaf the vines this year and to prune higher to provide some shade to the grapes.
The few rain episodes at the end of August, 15 mm, allowed photosynthesis to restart and helped some vines whose maturation had stopped due to water stress.
We decided to start our harvest on September 3, 2022, preferring to wait a little longer for the phenolic maturity of the anthocyanins and tannins, which were not yet there at the end of August.
The first juices we taste are well sweet, very low in acidity, the skins are very thick, and the seeds are brown and ripe.
We will have to wait for pressing to know the yield in juice, which should be average given the climatic incidents.
Grape variety: 100% pinot noir
Soil type: We find three types of 1er Crus in Gevrey Chambertin. The most famous ones line the Côte Saint Jacques, which is how this slope was named in the 19th century, stretching from Bossière, at the beginning of the comb, to Champeaux, adjacent to Brochon. Another chain is located under the grand Crus. Finally, the best plots of the alluvial cone, at the exit of the comb, have also earned this name. Gevrey is one of the two best-endowed villages in the Côte de Nuits.
This climate or district of land recognized for centuries produces a wine with a unique personality. The exposure is full south.
Area: 0.61 hectare
Very beautiful terroir located to the left of Clos Saint-Jacques at the foot of the Combe de Lavaux.
Vines whose grapes sometimes struggle to reach their optimum maturity due to cold winds from the comb.
Wine characteristics: This cherry red wine, herbal and spicy, has a rich structure of elegant tannins. It possesses finesse and elegance to the highest degree, with a good structure. This wine has an airy grace, a delicate texture.
Tasting notes: Dominant aromas of red fruits, finesse, and elegance.
This wine is best enjoyed ripe and at its peak: to be consumed within 7 to 8 years.
Service: It pairs perfectly with cooked and roasted meats, strongly flavored poultry, game birds that are not too spicy, and roasted wild boar and deer require a quality vintage such as 1983, 1985, 1988.
