The 2017 Beaujolais-Villages Le Rang du Merle is produced from rows of vines that are preyed upon by birds, leaving very few grapes, which ripen rapidly. The resulting wine offers up aromas of overripe dark fruit, plum compote and Asian spices. On the palate, it’s full-bodied, rich and layered, with lots of fine tannin and sweet, heady fruit. Impressively, it displays no discernible pruney or oxidative qualities. It’s a decidedly atypical wine that would likely be at its best consumed as an after dinner digestif. Drink 2018-2022.
