Philippe Gilbert is a family estate of 28 hectares, located in the heart of the Menetou Salon appellation. His sauvignon blanc and pinot noir have become a model for the entire appellation.
Since 1998, the vineyard is led by Philippe Gilbert. With the complicity of the oenologist of the estate, Jean-Philippe Louis, they begin in the early 2000s conversion to organic and biodynamic. The goal: to enhance the soil and the plant, to obtain healthy and deep roots that will produce precise, long and harmonious wines. All this, in order to better transcribe the terroir. At the tasting, we discover incredibly saline notes at the end of the mouth, which, according to the winemaker, develop more and more, 10 years after the transition to biodynamics.
The Menetou-Salon appellation is close to Sancerre, and covers less than 500 hectares. The estate is exclusively planted in pinot noir for reds and sauvignon blanc for whites. These grape varieties reveal their full potential on vineyard soils, made up of marly and limestone from Kimmeridgian (the same soils found in Chablis).
We were looking for a Menetou Salon. During a tasting with Frederic Niger (Domaine de l'Ecu), we asked him if he had winemakers to recommend. His answer was mechanical and natural: "With the name of your company, you do not have much choice, go taste at Philippe Gilbert is the best." At the tasting, we were amazed by its crystalline whites and reds that have nothing to envy to some great pinot noir from Burgundy. A few days later he was part of our selection.
